Local residents joined Birmingham Airport staff, past and present,
for a step back in time on Wednesday morning, 9th July 2008, as
preparations for the Airport’s 70th anniversary took off in style
.
The coffee morning event, held at Marston Green Village Hall,
saw members of the local community and former employees
share their memories of the Airport’s eventful history. Among
the stories were tales from the official opening in 1939, as well
as recollections of the Airport’s original site at Elmdon
.
More than 80 people attended the event and a number of the
treasured memories are now due to be featured in a forthcoming
written history of the Airport, which will be produced to coincide
with the 70th anniversary celebrations next year
.
Birmingham Airport’s Head of Corporate and Community Affairs,
John Morris, said, "As we start to prepare for the Airport’s 70th
anniversary next year we were eager to hold a community event
where local residents could share their stories and memories. We
were delighted to see so many people brave the weather and come
out to see us and I’m sure the result will be a history that provides
an intriguing insight into the Airport down the years"
.
