August 2008 passenger figures - busiest month ever at Birmingham International Airport!!

Birmingham International Airport is celebrating a slice of history,
after August saw the highest number of passengers ever pass
through the Airport in a single month, surpassing the previous best
set in August 2005
.
The region’s gateway to the world handled 1,079,970 passengers
during August 2007, the busiest month to date, since opening back
in 1939. During the month, 741,445 scheduled passengers and
338,525charter travellers used the Airport’s two terminals,
an increase of7.4% over the previous year and 30,000 more
than the same month three years ago
.
This milestone comes on the back of a busiest-ever July, which
also resulted in the million passenger mark being achieved and
the Airport is now well on course for a record year
.
Joe Kelly, Acting Managing Director of Birmingham International
Airport, said, "The records continue to be broken here at the
Airport, following in the path of February, March, April, May and
July, which were all record-breaking months. For us to be able
to celebrate our busiest ever month is a great achievement
and something that we are all very proud of"
.
"With many exciting additions to the route network in the coming
months, including the launch of Turkish Airlines’ service to Istanbul
in December and a number of new Ryanair services, among them
the recently announced ski routes to Cuneo and Grenoble, a record
year is well within sight"
.
In August, growth was achieved on Non EU routes of 2.4%
and EUof 24.3%. The Irish Republic saw an increase of 20.4%.

Scheduled routes that experienced growth in August include:
Inverness (+90%), Marseille (+75.9%), Larnaca (+59%),
Milan (37.6%), Split (29.6%), Warsaw (28.3%), Lisbon (27.9%),
Krakow (25.8%), Ibiza (+21%), Hamburg (20.2%),
Ercan (+19.7%), Dundee (+18.9%), Stuttgart (+16.9%),
La Rochelle (+16.8%), Dusseldorf (+11.7%), Faro (+7.7%),
Hanover (+7%), Munich (+6.6%), Alicante (+5.8%),
Mahon (+5.5%), Almeria (+3%), Malaga (+2.7%),
Palma (+2.5%) and Barcelona (+2.2%)
.
Charter routes which experienced growth were:
Egypt (+66.3%), Mexico (+27.5%), Italy (+17.2%),
Croatia (+9.6%), Spain (+5.7%), Bulgaria (+4.4%)
and Turkey (+4%)
.
Scheduled traffic accounted for 68.7% of the total passenger traffic
in August whilst charter passengers made up the remaining 31.3%.
