January 2014 passengers at Birmingham Airport

Birmingham Airport handled 549,489 passengers during January 2014
- an increase of 10.6% on the previous year and the first time the airport
has experienced double digit growth since December 2005

This strong start to the new year was again lead by good results from Turkish
Airlines - up 38.5% - and Emirates - up 12.0% - and was underpinned by many
of the most frequently used routes also performing well - Dublin was up 24.5%
and Paris CDG by 13.8%

flybe have recently announced they will be commencing a further 7 new routes
and basing three additional aircraft at Birmingham Airport this summer which
with other new scheduled routes previously announced including Aegean Airlines
- to Athens - and Biman Bangladesh Airlines - to Dhaka and New York JFK - mean
the prospects for 2014 as a whole are looking good  
  
Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport's CEO, said: "These January figures show that
more and more people are realising the benefits of using Birmingham as an
alternative to other airports to fly for business and leisure"
  
"This is a great start to 2014 and we look forward to offering even more choice
this year as several new routes are launched and extra capacity is made
available on key routes" 
  
During January significant growth was achieved
on scheduled flights to destinations such as -
Stuttgart 106.9%, Milan 73.8%, Belfast International 53.5%,
Hannover 53.4%, Istanbul 38.5%, Aberdeen 32.2%,
Dusseldorf 30.0%, Copenhagen 26.8%, Dublin 24.5%,
Geneva 19.6%, Paris CDG 13.8% and Dubai 12.0%


Charter traffic which experience growth included -
Barbados 55.1% and Mexico 17.9%  
     
Scheduled traffic accounted for 88.6% of the total
passenger traffic in January whilst charter passengers
made up the remaining 11.4%
