Birmingham Airport handled 848,066 passengers during May 2013
- an increase of 7.2% on the previous year
This is an encouraging start to the main summer season helped by
the arrival of bmi regional and their three new routes to Gothenburg,
Lyon and Toulouse - joined by Billund in June, flybe's new route to
Lyon and the arrival of the additional based Monarch aircraft and
their new routes to Bordeaux and Split
Many existing routes did well - Istanbul was up 51% - even Dubai
which has suffered in recent times from all the capacity that has
been added from the UK to the Gulf region is up 14%
During May significant growth was achieved on scheduled flights
to destinations such as - Barcelona 282.4%, Fuerteventura 97.6%
Venice 89.9%, Guernsey 57.5%, Istanbul 51.6%, Arrecife 32.2%,
Rome 25.3%, Shannon 25.1% and Nice 23.5%
Charter traffic which experience growth included -
Malta 150.5%, Croatia 100.1% and Tunisia 62.8%
Scheduled traffic accounted for 78.3% of the total passenger traffic
in May whilst charter passengers made up the remaining 21.7%
