April 2012 passenger figures at Birmingham

Birmingham Airport handled 702,145 passengers during
April 2012 - an increase of 2.3% on the previous year
.
This is a excellent result - the passenger numbers in
April 2011 benefited from the extended holiday for the
Royal Wedding so it was always going to be a challenge
to better that month even after a 9% increase over Easter
.
Clearly the month benefited from the new routes - and
additional based aircraft - that started at the end of March
many of which have got off to an encouraging start
.
May has already got to an encouraging start helped by
further new routes commencing although with the usual
Spring Bank Holiday weekend delayed to June to mark
the Queen's Diamond Jubilee this year the comparison
for the month as a whole may again be challenging
.
During April significant growth was achieved
on scheduled flights to destinations such as -
Milan 53.2%, Istanbul 51.0%, Katowice 42.2%.
Waterford 38.1%, Knock 33.4%, Montpelier 32.7%,
Gerona 28.5%, Munich 23.7% and Dalaman 20.3%
.
Charter traffic which experience growth included -
Barbados 64.2%, Italy 63.1% and Turkey 21.1%
.
Scheduled traffic accounted for 86.6% of the total
passenger traffic in April whilst charter passengers
made up the remaining 13.4%
.
