May 2009 passenger figures

US Airways launched their new service to Philadelphia
Birmingham International Airport handled 831,738 passengers
during May 2009 - a fall of 5.2% on the previous year
.
Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport’s Chief Executive Officer,
explains: "May’s figures, which represent a 5.2% fall, should
come as no surprise as the industry continues to face uncertain
times, given the current economic climate. Across the globe the
aviation industry is battling to weather the downturn and this
will undoubtedly be the case for the coming months as airlines
and airports alike react to the recessional forces"
.
"However, despite these tough times May saw the launch
of US Airways’ five-weekly service to Philadelphia, which
represents both a new route and a new airline for
Birmingham. The Airport will continue to work with our
partners to provide choice and value for money, to help
make these difficult times a little easier for Midlands
business and leisure travellers"
.
During May significant growth was achieved on
scheduled flights to destinations including -
