Birmingham Airport awards electric bus contract to Volvo Bus UK to supply six 7900e single deck buses

Birmingham Airport has awarded Volvo Bus UK the contract to supply the airport with six 7900e
single deck electric buses. Launching in November 2019, the ultra-low emission buses will operate
as the free passenger transport service via all airport car park routes

The decision to introduce electric buses came as a result of a review undertaken by the airport into
its future vehicle provision. The Volvo 7900e will provide an 80% lower energy consumption than
an equivalent sized diesel bus. Two high level charging points will be installed outside of the terminal.
Additional plug-in charging points will be located in the coach park - and in the future, these will be
made available for other electric bus and or coach operators to use

Nick Barton, CEO of Birmingham Airport said: "This partnership is a key milestone for us. We are
always investigating new and innovative ways to reduce our carbon emissions and through the
partnership with Volvo Bus UK, we will do just this"

"We have made significant customer service improvements across the airport to increase capacity
and improve passenger experience, with the vision of positioning Birmingham as one of Europe's
leading regional airports. The electric buses form part of this vision, not to mention their sustainability
benefits being ultra-low emission. Since 2012 the Airport has reduced its CO2 per passenger by 20%.
Implementing the six electric buses will work towards lowering this even further which is just fantastic"

Nick Page, Managing Director of Volvo Bus UK & Ireland, said: "It is very exciting that the 7900e has
been chosen for Birmingham Airport in support of its ambition to provide the best possible environmentally
friendly bus service for airport customers and stakeholders alike"

"Over the last 15 months the 7900e has undertaken a UK wide demonstration tour where it has shown the
contribution that can now be made to improving air quality in the areas where it has been in service.  We
are confident the 7900e and accompanying technologies will help Birmingham Airport to achieve its goals"

Birmingham Airport has announced that, for the third year, it will be the headline sponsor
of the Chinese New Year festival in Birmingham city centre

The Chinese New Year festival will be held on Sunday 10 February 2019 and is expected to
attract more than 30,000 revellers. Friends and family will gather in the Southside area of
the city to enjoy the vast entertainment - including lion and dragon dancing, fireworks and
other performances, as well as local Chinese cuisine available to all passers-by

This year will be The Year of the Pig in the Chinese lunar calendar, with the new year
falling on Tuesday 5 February 2019. However, celebrations will run throughout the first
half of February, up until 19 February 2019. Over this period, festivities will be found

Bulling and Grand Central, and China town -  spreading across Southside Square,
Hurst Street, Inge Street, The Arcadian and The Hippodrome

Tuesday 5 February 2019 - the official Chinese New Year's Day

The West Midlands has one of the biggest Chinese communities in the UK, with a population
of over 20,000 living in the Midlands, plus an additional 150,000 Chinese students studying
across the region. In the last 12 months alone, Birmingham Airport welcomed nearly 120,000
passengers through its doors travelling to either China or Hong Kong

Nick Barton, CEO at Birmingham Airport said: "Supporting Chinese New Year 2019 as the
headline sponsor for the third time is fantastic and something we are extremely proud of.
The Midlands region holds great heritage and culture, especially in Birmingham which is said
to be more ethnically diverse than the UK's capital of London for its size. To be a part of this
history and culture is important to us, as we too hold great regional heritage and will be
celebrating our 80th anniversary this year. We would like to wish all those celebrating
Chinese New Year a happy and prosperous year ahead"

Birmingham Airport sponsors "Solar Bear" as part of "The Big Sleuth" summer 2017 art trail

Birmingham Airport has signed up to sponsor a bear this summer in the exciting Birmingham
art trail called "The Big Sleuth". Presented by Birmingham Children's Hospital Charity in partnership
with creative producers Wild in Art, "'The Big Sleuth' will see up to 100 beautifully designed bear
statues appearing throughout Birmingham over a 10-week period this summer from Monday
10 July 2017 with satellite trails in Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, Sandwell and at Resorts World

"'The Big Sleuth" aims to inspire people to become a tourist in their own town. Bears will be
placed not only in the city centre, but in a host of locations across all ten districts of Birmingham,
encouraging residents to follow the trail and discover areas of the wider region which they
may not have explored before

The design chosen by the Airport is called "'Solar Polar" and is painted by artist David Graham.
The design represents the famous Northern Lights or "'the aurora borealis". The bright dancing
lights of the aurora are the result of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun
that enter the earth's atmosphere and can be seen in the sky

"Solar Polar" will be located at the city's famous Victoria Square until Sunday 17 September 2017,
during this time a selfie competition will be run by the airport to encourage the public to find the bear

Icelandair operate a Boeing 757 in "Hekla Aurora" - Northern lights - colours
David Winstanley, Chief Operating Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: "It's a fantastic privilege to
be involved with another city art trail project. "The Big Hoot" in 2015 attracted many visitors not only
to the city and region but also to the airport. We jumped at the chance to be a sponsor again and
we are really pleased with the bear design that we have chosen. It is very relevant to the Airport
as we have four Icelandair flights a week to Reykjavik, a gateway city for visitors of the Northern Lights

Elinor Eustace, Deputy Director of Fundraising at Birmingham Children's Hospital, said: "The Big Sleuth"
is incredibly important to us as we know it will encourage residents and tourists to get active and enjoy
being outdoors - whether they decide to walk, jog, run or cycle the trail"

Charlie Langhorne, Director of Wild in Art, said: "It's fantastic to have Birmingham Airport on board
again this year. They recognise the great benefits of getting involved as well as the positives for the
local community, and of course Birmingham Children's Hospital. Together with other sponsors,
partners and funders, they have enabled the event to really take off!"

"The Big Sleuth" comes hot on the heels of "The Big Hoot" which attracted more than 800,000 visitors
and in total raised over £625,000 for Birmingham Children's Hospital. At the end of the 10 week trail
the giant painted bears will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the hospital. To find out more
about the project, please visit

Birmingham Trees for Life plants trees in Sheldon Country Park supported by Birmingham Airport

Birmingham Airport has given support to charity, Birmingham Trees for Life - BTFL -
by funding tree planting to help enhance the environment in the local area

Birmingham Trees for Life is a registered charity, a Partnership between Birmingham
Civic Society and Birmingham City Council, and spreads awareness and understanding
of the value and importance of trees. Its members raise money to enable more trees
to be planted and actively encourage the involvement of communities in planting. Since
2006 over 50,000 trees across the city have been planted by the charity

Last week it was Sheldon Country Park which was selected due to its proximity to
Birmingham Airport. Green fingered members of BTFL were joined by local councillors,
park rangers, airport representatives and school children from nearby Stanville Primary
School and Perry Beeches Academy, to begin a morning of digging and planting. In
total 10 standard trees and 1,000 smaller whips were planted

Andy Holding, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Birmingham Airport, said: "The trustees
decided to award Birmingham Trees for Life with this funding as the work they do doesn’t
just bring enormous environmental benefits but also brings together local community groups
to help increase awareness of the importance of trees in urban environments

Deborah Needle, a Development Officer at BTFL, said: "We are very pleased to have the
airport on board as a corporate sponsor. The trees we have planted from their funding
will make a huge difference to the environment surrounding the airport and greatly
improve this local parkland for future generations"

Councillor Mike Ward, from the Sheldon Ward and Chair of the Trustees at Birmingham
Airport, said "It’s vitally important that we get young people connected with their
environment, and this project is a great way of doing that. We hope that by getting the
children involved in the planting of trees they will treasure them forever. We are also
delighted to see the Airport working alongside local communities"

The funding awarded to BTFL, forms part of the Birmingham Airport Community Trust
Fund which awards grants of up to £3,000 to community groups in areas most affected
by the Airport’s operations. Each year Birmingham Airport contributes £75,000 to the
Community Trust Fund.  Additionally any charges made to airlines which breach night
noise regulations, are added to the fund

The next available round of Trust Fund awards will be made in April 2017. The closing
date for receipt of completed applications is Friday 24 February 2017. More information

Birmingham is named the world's most punctual airport in 2016 by OAG, the air travel specialist

Birmingham Airport has been named the world’s most punctual airport in 2016 by air travel
intelligence company OAG, with 91.28% of arriving and departing flights operating on time

With over 100,000 scheduled flights from Birmingham Airport last year, the most punctual
route was to Dublin, boasting an on-time score of over 95 per cent. The UK airport beat
contenders from countries such as Japan, America and Germany to claim the global crown

On receiving the award, Birmingham Airport’s Chief Executive, Paul Kehoe, said, "To be
crowned the world’s most punctual airport in 2016 is a tremendous prize, particularly in
the busiest twelve months in our 77 year history"

"This achievement is a result of a team effort by the seven thousand employees and
140 companies operating at the airport - from the ground handlers to bus drivers,
fuellers to caterers, and cleaners to office staff. We have invested £350 million in the
last ten years to improve the airport infrastructure and we’re currently working on a
further £100 million development project to improve passenger facilities even further"

"We work closely with our airlines and handling agents to ensure that delays, which
are within our control, are kept to a minimum, and we thank all of our partners for
their continued hard work to become the world’s most punctual airport"

John Grant, Senior Analyst at OAG, said: "The UK’s airports and airlines have always
been leaders in the global aviation industry, delivering exceptionally high service
levels. The success of Birmingham is just another example of how the UK’s regional
airports have created world-class facilities and networks that both connect their
regional communities to the world, and provide valuable economic growth"

The multi-million pound developments seen over the last decade at Birmingham
Airport have included a runway extension to allow for more long haul flights, a
new state of the art pier with parking stands to accommodate the world’s largest
aircraft, more security lanes and becoming the first airport of its size to operate
its own air traffic control services in 2015

Birmingham Airport lights up its Air Traffic Control Tower in support of "Glow Gold September"‏

Birmingham Airport is supporting "Glow Gold September" a childhood cancer awareness
campaign. For a week from Thursday 1 September 2016 the Airport’s Air Traffic Control
Tower (ATC) on the Elmdon site adjacent to the A45 Coventry Road will be lit up gold
from dusk to dawn to support a group of parents of children with cancer

The "Glow Gold September" campaign gets iconic buildings and landmarks throughout
the UK and the rest of the World to illuminate in gold during the month of September.
Using the interest generated to spread the word on the early warning signs and symptoms

Julie Yates, mum of 16 year old Niamh who had bone cancer in 2012 and is now 4 years
in remission approached the Airport to ask for support of the campaign.  Julie says "Our
aim at "Glow Gold" has been to ensure the colour gold becomes synonymous with
childhood cancer and our awareness month September. We have been asking iconic
buildings and landmarks to illuminate gold. And have been asking charities to work
together to raise the profile of childhood cancer and improve awareness

Jo Lloyd, Commercial Director commented: "We are delighted to join in this very worthwhile
cause. Birmingham Airport’s Air Traffic Control Tower is an iconic building in the Midlands
and it made perfect sense for the Airport to be involved and for us to join in and light the
tower up gold.  Hopefully with awareness more can be done to see the early warning signs
and help children and young people"

Julie continues "Knowledge is power, and we wish to empower parents with the knowledge
required to pick up the signs and symptoms early. We are proud to have over 190 buildings
and landmarks signed up to Glow Gold in September throughout the UK and the rest of the
world". From Birmingham Airport ATC Tower and Old Joe Clocktower to Edinburgh Castle,
Canary Wharf, Niagara Falls and the Olympic Cauldron Vancouver. Most venues will be
glowing gold on the evening of the 1st  September 2016 from dusk until dawn in tribute
to the children and families affected by childhood cancer, past and present

Birmingham Airport welcomes "11 million passengers in a year" for first time in the airport's history

Birmingham Airport has broken through the rolling "11 million passengers in a year"
total just a year after breaking the 10 million passenger mark in August 2015 - this
represents a 10.2% increase compared with the same period last year

The airport has also recorded its busiest single day to date on Friday 19 August 2016
when 44,767 passengers travelled through the terminal - the previous busiest day was
on Friday 28 August 2015

The eleven-millionth passenger, James Sheffield from Edgbaston in Birmingham, set
the milestone on Friday 19 August 2016 as he checked in for his United Airlines flight
to San Francisco (via Newark). He was treated by the Airport to a slap up meal and
a magnum of champagne
Birmingham Airport's Head of Communications, Justine Howl is pictured with the millionth passenger, James Sheffield

It's kicked off my holiday brilliantly and I look forward to enjoying my huge bottle of
champagne with friends when I return"

Birmingham Airport's Chief Executive Officer, Paul Kehoe, said: "Reaching 10 million
passengers last August was a big milestone in the airport's history but reaching
11 million is an absolute game changer. It shows that demand for flying to and from
the Midlands is rapidly rising and this is only expected to continue as national and
international investment in the region continues and the Midlands Engine powers on"

"We have celebrated a huge amount of accomplishments recently, including welcoming
an astonishing thirteen new airlines to the airport, creating an even stronger network of
global routes. We now have over 440 direct or one-stop flights globally with 50 airlines
and proudly handle the magnificent Airbus A380 and Boeing "dreamliner" aircraft daily"

"The future is exciting as we focus on the next milestone - twelve million passengers
- and we will be working very hard over the next year to deliver even more connectivity
for our region's business and leisure travellers"

Over the last 12 months, long-haul traffic has increased by 26%, with particular growth

in our city’s children and the wonderful, dedicated staff who teach them

Simon Richards, Chief Financial Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: "We are delighted to be
partnering The Schools of King Edward in Birmingham with the "Opening Doors" campaign,
not least because it fits so well with our own priorities, where we aim to target our support
at those communities in East Birmingham and North Solihull where it can be most effective"

"The Learning Hub allows us to work directly with local children and their parents to raise
aspirations and help develop the skills they will need in the world of work. This project is
one of many that Birmingham Airport operates to ensure that those local communities which
are affected by our operations can share in the economic and social benefits of having a major
airport on their doorstep"

Ms Gill Sparrow, Head Teacher of Hillstone Primary School, commented: "Hillstone Primary
School is delighted to work with the Schools of King Edward VI in Birmingham.  The range of
enrichment activities and quality of the CPD sessions on offer give our pupils and teachers
excellent opportunities that they may not otherwise have.  We are looking forward to seeing
the Learning Hub really take off!  Our pupils are always excited when they return to school
after an event here"
