Birmingham Trees for Life plants trees in Sheldon Country Park supported by Birmingham Airport
![]() |
Deborah Needle, a Development Officer at BTFL, said: "We are very pleased to have the airport on board as a corporate sponsor. The trees we have planted from their funding will make a huge difference to the environment surrounding the airport and greatly improve this local parkland for future generations" Councillor Mike Ward, from the Sheldon Ward and Chair of the Trustees at Birmingham Airport, said "It’s vitally important that we get young people connected with their environment, and this project is a great way of doing that. We hope that by getting the children involved in the planting of trees they will treasure them forever. We are also delighted to see the Airport working alongside local communities" The funding awarded to BTFL, forms part of the Birmingham Airport Community Trust Fund which awards grants of up to £3,000 to community groups in areas most affected by the Airport’s operations. Each year Birmingham Airport contributes £75,000 to the Community Trust Fund. Additionally any charges made to airlines which breach night noise regulations, are added to the fund The next available round of Trust Fund awards will be made in April 2017. Birmingham is named the world's most punctual airport in 2016 by OAG, the air travel specialist
![]() |
John Grant, Senior Analyst at OAG, said: "The UK’s airports and airlines have always been leaders in the global aviation industry, delivering exceptionally high service levels. The success of Birmingham is just another example of how the UK’s regional airports have created world-class facilities and networks that both connect their regional communities to the world, and provide valuable economic growth" The multi-million pound developments seen over the last decade at Birmingham Airport have included a runway extension to allow for more long haul flights, a new state of the art pier with parking stands to accommodate the world’s largest aircraft, more security lanes and becoming the first airport of its size to operate its own air traffic control services in 2015 The full results from the OAG Punctuality League 2016 can be seen here |

Birmingham Airport lights up its Air Traffic Control Tower in support of "Glow Gold September"
Birmingham Airport is supporting "Glow Gold September" a childhood cancer awareness
campaign. For a week from Thursday 1 September 2016 the Airport’s Air Traffic Control
Tower (ATC) on the Elmdon site adjacent to the A45 Coventry Road will be lit up gold
from dusk to dawn to support a group of parents of children with cancer
The "Glow Gold September" campaign gets iconic buildings and landmarks throughout
the UK and the rest of the World to illuminate in gold during the month of September.
Using the interest generated to spread the word on the early warning signs and symptoms
Julie Yates, mum of 16 year old Niamh who had bone cancer in 2012 and is now 4 years
in remission approached the Airport to ask for support of the campaign. Julie says "Our
aim at "Glow Gold" has been to ensure the colour gold becomes synonymous with
childhood cancer and our awareness month September. We have been asking iconic
buildings and landmarks to illuminate gold. And have been asking charities to work
together to raise the profile of childhood cancer and improve awareness
Jo Lloyd, Commercial Director commented: "We are delighted to join in this very worthwhile
cause. Birmingham Airport’s Air Traffic Control Tower is an iconic building in the Midlands
and it made perfect sense for the Airport to be involved and for us to join in and light the
tower up gold. Hopefully with awareness more can be done to see the early warning signs
and help children and young people"
Julie continues "Knowledge is power, and we wish to empower parents with the knowledge
required to pick up the signs and symptoms early. We are proud to have over 190 buildings
and landmarks signed up to Glow Gold in September throughout the UK and the rest of the
world". From Birmingham Airport ATC Tower and Old Joe Clocktower to Edinburgh Castle,
Canary Wharf, Niagara Falls and the Olympic Cauldron Vancouver. Most venues will be
glowing gold on the evening of the 1st September 2016 from dusk until dawn in tribute
to the children and families affected by childhood cancer, past and present

represents a 10.2% increase compared with the same period last year
The airport has also recorded its busiest single day to date on Friday 19 August 2016

Mr Sheffield, who was jetting off to visit friends in San Francisco for a week-long holiday,
said: "Now that was a check-in with a difference! I wondered what was happening when
I arrived at the desk and airport officials approached me, but what a fantastic surprise.
It's kicked off my holiday brilliantly and I look forward to enjoying my huge bottle of
champagne with friends when I return"
Birmingham Airport's Chief Executive Officer, Paul Kehoe, said: "Reaching 10 million
passengers last August was a big milestone in the airport's history but reaching
11 million is an absolute game changer. It shows that demand for flying to and from
the Midlands is rapidly rising and this is only expected to continue as national and
international investment in the region continues and the Midlands Engine powers on"
"We have celebrated a huge amount of accomplishments recently, including welcoming
an astonishing thirteen new airlines to the airport, creating an even stronger network of
global routes. We now have over 440 direct or one-stop flights globally with 50 airlines
and proudly handle the magnificent Airbus A380 and Boeing "dreamliner" aircraft daily"
"The future is exciting as we focus on the next milestone - twelve million passengers
- and we will be working very hard over the next year to deliver even more connectivity
for our region's business and leisure travellers"
Over the last 12 months, long-haul traffic has increased by 26%, with particular growth
seen on services to the Middle East (+34.1%), North America (+32.6%) and Europe
(+10.8%). Low cost flights increased by 11.5%, scheduled services overall grew by 6.9%
and charter by 2.4%. Monthly passenger number records have been broken consecutively
for the last seventeen months at Birmingham Airport

competitions, particularly the Dance World Cup this month"
Andy Holding, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Birmingham Airport, said: "The Trustees decided
to award Spotlight with this funding as Vicky and the team do an incredible job to teach young people
