Mr Sheffield, who was jetting off to visit friends in San Francisco for a week-long holiday,
said: "Now that was a check-in with a difference! I wondered what was happening when
I arrived at the desk and airport officials approached me, but what a fantastic surprise.
It's kicked off my holiday brilliantly and I look forward to enjoying my huge bottle of
champagne with friends when I return"
Birmingham Airport's Chief Executive Officer, Paul Kehoe, said: "Reaching 10 million
passengers last August was a big milestone in the airport's history but reaching
11 million is an absolute game changer. It shows that demand for flying to and from
the Midlands is rapidly rising and this is only expected to continue as national and
international investment in the region continues and the Midlands Engine powers on"
"We have celebrated a huge amount of accomplishments recently, including welcoming
an astonishing thirteen new airlines to the airport, creating an even stronger network of
global routes. We now have over 440 direct or one-stop flights globally with 50 airlines
and proudly handle the magnificent Airbus A380 and Boeing "dreamliner" aircraft daily"
"The future is exciting as we focus on the next milestone - twelve million passengers
- and we will be working very hard over the next year to deliver even more connectivity
for our region's business and leisure travellers"
Over the last 12 months, long-haul traffic has increased by 26%, with particular growth
seen on services to the Middle East (+34.1%), North America (+32.6%) and Europe
(+10.8%). Low cost flights increased by 11.5%, scheduled services overall grew by 6.9%
and charter by 2.4%. Monthly passenger number records have been broken consecutively
for the last seventeen months at Birmingham Airport

October 2014 passengers at Birmingham Airport
Birmingham Airport handled 878,689 passengers during October 2014
- an increase of 5.8% on the previous year
Another solid result and while not a "record month" the airport remains
on track for a record year for the first time since 2008....
.... indeed because of the number of new flybe routes that have been added
for the winter schedule together with the continuation of many that started
during the summer both November and December should be record months
Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport CEO said: "We’ve seen more and more passengers
choose Birmingham Airport this summer, breaking records along the way, so it’s
only fitting we end the season with another really strong performance"
"This summer has raised the bar for next year and we’re confident we can rise
to that challenge. Not only are we seeing many airlines increasing frequencies
and operating bigger aircraft that have more seats for next summer, but recently
we announced two key new routes to New York JFK with American Airlines and
Barcelona with Vueling, both starting in summer 2015"
Paul added: "We’ll look to build on what has been a fantastic summer, as we
enter an equally challenging winter period, supported with new routes to Berlin,
Oslo and Hamburg with Flybe, as well as extended services to Cologne, Toulouse,
Bordeaux, Florence, Oporto and Reykjavik"
While, as a result of the recession, passengers numbers at Birmingham Airport
have hovered around 9 million since 2008 it really does look if they will break
through 10 million for the first time in 2015 - and with some style!
During October significant growth was achieved
on scheduled flights to destinations such as -
Barcelona 76.7%, Hannover 76.5%, Stuttgart 70.4%,
Milan 68.8%, Jersey 64.3%, Tenerife 36.5%,
Lyon 36.3%, Copenhagen 31.4%, Dublin 24.8%,
Paris 8.0%, Dubai 4.9% and Istanbul 1.5%
Charter traffic which experience growth included -
Jamaica 37.9%, Italy 25.3 and Mexico 23.8%
Scheduled traffic accounted for 83.8% of the total
passenger traffic in October whilst charter
passengers made up the remaining 16.4%

"We’ve also enjoyed a strong summer performance too, recording the second
busiest month in our history, as passengers enjoy the benefits of our state-of
-the-art facilities and expanding network of flights. These growing passenger
figures, coupled with the extension of our runway, which is due to be complete
in spring 2014, certainly provides encouraging signs for the future"
Passenger numbers at the Airport have been given a significant boost
thanks to the introduction of new airlines including Air India, who recently
began operating flights four times weekly to Delhi and Amritsar, using the
Boeing 787-8 "dreamliner" aircraft in August
The continued expansion of other airlines including Monarch and Aer Lingus
has also been a key factor in attracting new passengers to Birmingham.
Turkish Airlines increased its daily flight programme from seven to ten
flights a week to Istanbul back in April, providing onward connections to
221 destinations worldwide
Between September 2012 and August 2013, popular destinations for passengers
flying from Birmingham included Amsterdam, Paris and New York. However,
Dublin proved to be most popular, for those visiting friends and relatives,
closely followed by Dubai, for onward connections to the Far East and Australia

While the percentage increase may not seem high it follows the 9.1% increase

still had four Boeing 737's based while Monarch had added two leased Boeing

July 2013 passenger figures at Birmingham

This is an excellent result - and only the second "one million passengers
in a month" since 2009 - and indeed the figures were not far short of
the record July in 2008
Monarch who have started new routes this summer to Bordeaux and Split
and added flights on existing routes have consolidated their leading position
in the leisure market from Birmingham Airport....
.... the figures are all the more encouraging given that last year bmibaby
- who closed down in September 2012 - still had four Boeing 737's based
at Birmingham while Monarch had just added two leased Boeing 737's to
operate similar routes for the peak season so there was a one off benefit

Routes with additional flights again did well - the Turkish Airlines service
to Istanbul was up a further 24.6% while Dublin where Aer Lingus have
added three additional daily ATR 72's flights increased by 11.7% - and
this was already Birmingham Airport's busiest route!
Other new services operating this summer include Aer Lingus to Knock,
bmi regional to Billund, Gothenburg, Lyon and Toulouse, easyJet to
Belfast International and flybe to Amsterdam and Lyon
August has of course seen the start of the new Air India Boeing 787-8
"dreamliner" service from Amritsar and Delhi so prospects for continued
growth for the rest of the summer are good
