Birmingham International Airport handled 844,315 passengers
during October 2008 a decrease of 0.7% over the previous year
Despite passenger numbers remaining broadly flat month -on-month, this was a far better outcome than experienced at most other UK airports in October. Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport's Chief Executive Officer, explains:
"This year has been an exciting one for Birmingham Airport with a host of new airline announcements and a growing network of routes. With passenger numbers within 0.7% of the same month last year, October shows that we are not immune to the current economic slowdown and that the coming year will be a challenging one"
. "The UK recessional pressures have clearly exerted an affect on the Airport but with the latest statistics indicating an average fall in passenger numbers across all UK airports of around 6% last month, Birmingham continues to perform well"
. Despite the overall reduction, growth was achieved on flights to the EU (+9.9%) and non-EU (+2.7%), while the Irish Republic saw an increase of 15.4% with Ryanair, among others, performing particularly strongly
. Scheduled routes that experienced growth included: Bratislava (+141.1%), Inverness (+54.9%), Larnaca (+44.6%),
Dundee (+25%), Milan (+20.1%), Düsseldorf (+18.2%),
